Sam Gyimah is UK minister for IP

Sam Gyimah, the UK member of parliament (MP) for East Surrey, has been confirmed as minister of intellectual property.

Gyimah was appointed as minister of state for universities and science, replacing Jo Johnson as part of the Conservative party’s cabinet reshuffle.

Johnson took on the responsibilities of minister for IP in January 2017, following the departure of Baroness Lucy Neville-Rolfe from the role.

The UK IP Office took to Twitter to confirm the news today (24 January) and extend a “warm welcome” to Gyimah.

Gyimah is now responsible for the UK’s intellectual property, industrial strategy, universities and higher education reform, student finance, widening participation and social mobility, education exports, science and research, innovation, agri-tech, space and technology.

Prior to becoming an MP, Gyimah spent five years working for Goldman Sachs as an investment banker.
