ICC calls on UN members to fight counterfeiting and piracy

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has asked UN member states to do more to protect consumers from the health and safety risks posed by counterfeits and pirated goods.

ICC’s Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP) policy adviser Suriya Prabha, speaking at an event on consumer protection law in UN member states on 4 July, highlighted the significant risks to consumer health and safety associated with the proliferation of potentially hazardous counterfeit products and their increasing availability online.

UN member states were urged to include anti-counterfeiting and -piracy strategies in national consumer protection efforts, including for online platforms.

BASCAP has also released a position paper on strengthening consumer protection, which calls for access to information, raising consumer awareness and increasing protection on ecommerce platforms.

Prabha indicated that BASCAP is willing to aid the strengthening of consumer protection, by offering best practices to remove fakes from online platforms and helping interested member states to build robust consumer protection systems.
