Netflix, Amazon and Disney help launch anti-piracy coalition


A 30-strong group of content creators and entertainment companies, including Netflix, Amazon and Disney, have launched the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) to protect the legal market for creative content and reduce online piracy.

In a statement, ACE said the legal marketplace for creative content had grown exponentially to accommodate more than 480 online entertainment services, opening the door for a higher risk of piracy.

“Films and television shows can often be found on pirate sites within days—and in many cases hours—of release,” the group said.

“Last year, there were an estimated 5.4 billion downloads of pirated wide release films and primetime television and video-on-demand shows using peer-to-peer protocols worldwide. There were also an estimated 21.4 billion total visits to streaming piracy sites worldwide across both desktops and mobile devices in 2016.”

According to a report from the Digital Citizens Alliance, piracy can put consumers at risk, targeting them with malware, which runs the risk identity theft and financial loss.

ACE said that the new coalition would expand ongoing cooperative efforts to reduce the prevalence of online piracy.

“ACE will draw upon the global anti-piracy resources of the Motion Picture Association of America in concert with the internal anti-piracy expertise of the ACE coalition members.”
