Florida court order shuts down 19 pirate sites

Media and entertainment company ABS-CBN has secured a court ruling that orders registries to seize control of 19 allegedly infringing domain names that facilitate access to copyright infringing websites.

The order, which came from the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida late last month, calls for each of the 19 domains to be transferred to a new registrar of ABS-CBN’s choosing.

The new registrar will then be required to immediately institute a redirection, leading to a website holding both ABS-CBN’s original complaint and the court order.

The majority of the 19 domain names contain a reference to ‘pinoytv’ in various different forms.

In its initial complaint, ABS-CBN said that the websites claim to offer illegal access to its content.

“[The websites] facilitate access to infringing content which is streamed through their respective websites operating under the subject domain names, rather than users of the website uploading the content.”

It added: “[The websites] entire internet-based website businesses amount to nothing more than illegal operations established and operated in order to infringe the intellectual property rights of ABS-CBN and others.

ABS-CBN did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
