China copyright monitoring website goes live

China has launched a website dedicated to monitoring copyright as the country steps up efforts to tackle piracy.

The Copyright Monitoring Center’s website, www.12426.cn, offers registration services and monitoring of online and offline infringement for participating rights holders and government agencies, which will receive warnings when piracy is discovered.

The centre uses matching and searching technology to scan online sources and aims to target devices, including PCs, mobiles and set-top boxes, for copyright infringement, according to the website.

The China Audio-Video Copyright Association set up the monitoring centre and website to provide technical support for the government as it attempts to crack down on piracy.

China’s vice premier, Wang Yang, recently said that the country investigated more than 200,000 cases involving piracy and counterfeiting last year, arresting more than 22,000 suspects with a near 81 percent conviction rate.

In 2017, the government will tighten online supervision and investigate sources of production, and a special operation to prevent the trade of counterfeit products will be launched, according to Yang.

Senior Chinese officials, including Premier Li Keqiang, publically acknowledged the need to combat piracy and counterfeiting in March.
