The book, which was written by Eric Hauser, assistant principal at Denton Independent School District, “included allusions to the alt-right movement and was deliberately targeted at children”, according to Furie’s pro bono counsel at law firm WilmerHale.
It said: “Under threat of litigation, Hauser admitted infringement. He agreed today to stop distribution of his book in all forms. Under US copyright law, Furie is entitled to all of the profits that Hauser made by selling his infringing book.”
Furie plans to donate all of these profits to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
He has since issued several takedown notices against alt-right users of the meme and attempted to “counteract the spread of Pepe the Frog’s association with the alt-right”.
Hauser has since stepped down as assistant principal.
