Hogan Lovells hires ITC judge

Hogan Lovells has hired former US International Trade Commission (ITC) Administrative Law Judge Theodore Essex.

Essex will join the firm’s intellectual property litigation practice in Washington DC. He has experience handling many intellectual property law issues, including scores of Section 337 investigations at the ITC.

Cline Crowson, head of Hogan Lovells’s intellectual property, media and technology practice, said: “Theodore Essex has been one of the most well-known and respected judges at the ITC, not only for his judicial work, but also for regularly sharing his intellectual property insights with lawyers, judges, and scholars around the world.”

“The ITC is an important forum for IP litigation for our clients both within and outside the US. Continuing to grow our ITC litigation practice is a logical step for our intellectual property, media and technology group and the firm.”

She added: “Judge Essex is a natural fit for this practice, and our clients will certainly benefit from his unique perspective and experiences as a former judge.”

Commenting on the move, Essex said: “The Hogan Lovells brand is internationally recognised for its deep bench of strong lawyers and its long history of experience in intellectual property and trade matters.”

“While at the ITC, I was steeped in intellectual property law and focused on adherence to that law and its application to the facts of each case I heard. I am excited to now bring that experience to clients.”
